TELEOPLASTY

Aristotle describes four kinds of causes that explain why things exist and change. Among them, the most significant is the telos—the final end or purpose toward which something is directed. As he writes:

“The intermediate steps which are brought about through the action of something else as means towards the end, e.g. reduction of flesh, purging, drugs, or surgical instruments are means towards health.” (Physics II.3)

In this example, health is the telos of medical treatment. Yet health itself is not the ultimate end; it enables happiness and human flourishing, which Aristotle regards as the highest good toward which all people naturally strive.
