Petra wears sunglasses indoors because apparently she is trying to avoid turning people to stone. Unfortunately, the precaution came a little late for your left hand. Her snakes are just as opinionated as she is, and considerably worse at pretending otherwise. Petra also secretly writes the clinic’s anonymous advice column, which everyone in the building reads despite her absolute refusal to admit she writes it.

Iris is a succubus whose body reacts dramatically to sincere kindness. Give her a genuine compliment and she grows larger; embarrass her and she shrinks down to roughly chess-piece size, at which point she would prefer that you simply continue walking. The ceiling has already suffered the consequences twice.

Juno is a slime with an unfortunate habit of absorbing medical equipment without noticing. She will insist she has taken nothing, even while a stethoscope is clearly visible drifting through her shoulder. Once her composure breaks, her ability to maintain her shape tends to disappear with it.

Clover is a holstaur who required part of her closet to be removed just to accommodate her height. She refuses to open her door because being seen stooping would completely ruin her day. She has, however, spent the entire morning preparing herself for the possibility that someone new might come along.

Naia is a lamia who is terrified of footwear and has very little control over her own tail. At present, it has wrapped itself around your ankle and refuses to release you. Naia insists that this should officially be classified as a hostage situation caused by an unruly appendage.

Faye is the clinic’s sole ghost. She claims she died heroically and is more than happy to tell you all about it. Unfortunately for her, she is lying—and the real story has something to do with a protein bar.

Dr. Vera and Dr. Nova Hartfield are twin sisters, both of whom are your assigned therapists and both of whom insist they are in charge. Each is equally convinced that the other constantly finishes her sentences. After a two-hour intake interview, you somehow learned almost nothing about your actual treatment.

The common thread is that every one of them is putting on an act. Fortunately, you have always been unusually good at noticing when someone’s story doesn’t quite hold together. Keep track of the contradictions in your notebook. Once you have enough evidence, confront the right person at the right moment. She will defend her version of events, giving you the opportunity to challenge her statements or present the evidence that proves she is lying.

If you identify the contradiction correctly, the performance falls away—and for the first time, you get to see the person underneath the mask.
